Archaeology in Action Program 1 - First People: The Early Indians

  • Length: 90 minutes
  • Original Air Date: Oct 04, 1995
  • Targeted Grade Level: 3-6
  • Subject Area: Science, Social Studies
This field trip originated live from an excavation site along the Potomac River and featured archaeologists and anthropologists who share with students some recent discoveries that have revealed much about Virginia's first settlers, the Native American Indians. Viewers are also taken on mini- field trips to a site where Paleo-Indians once flourished; to Daugherty's Cave, a site dating back to the Archaic period; to Ely Mound, a site representing Mississippian Culture; and to the Graham-White site, a historic contact village. Shirley "Little Dove" Custalow-McGowan of the Mattoponi Tribe demonstrates her ancestors' traditional toolmaking techniques, music and cooking. The experts on site answered questions from callers during the last thirty minutes of the program.
